‘The latest word in green heat’

island-3In days gone by Wood burners were perceived as something only found in traditional Dorset cottage properties, however, the past few years have seen a big resurgence. Nowadays, with the advances of modern technology wood burners are far more energy efficient (up to 85% compared with the 15-20% of open fires) and are becoming an important part in helping us tackle climate change.

Wood Burners are Carbon Neutral

A wood burning stove is considered to be a carbon neutral appliance as the amount of carbon dioxide released during combustion is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed from the air during the growth of the tree.

Considered as a carbon neutral fuel, wood is the natural first choice for burning; however is it fundamentally important that it is dry and well seasoned. Hardwoods such as Oak, Beech and Ash will provide you with greater heat for a longer period, whilst softwoods will need more frequent refuelling.

As well as being attractive and efficient room heaters, woodburners can often be fitted with boilers. The output from the stove can be used indirectly for domestic hot water, radiators or connected to a thermal store. For convenience other sources of heat can be combined with these systems, making them a flexible, sustainable way of reducing your carbon footprint.

Installing a dedicated wood burning stove with a boiler for either domestic hot water or heating can attract a VAT rate of only 5% including costs for associated works on installations such as flue, hot water cylinders etc. See our page on Incentives for more information.
