Solar PV Panels - How It Works

Solar PV panels are ideally sited on a south facing roof at 30 - 40 degrees elevation but even on east and west facing roofs solar PV panels can produce up to 90% of their output. Photovoltaic (PV) technology uses solar cells to convert sunlight directly into electricity. Solar PV modules consist of semi-conducting material that absorbs photons from sunlight in a way that frees electrons from atoms. Electricity is produced as the electrons flow through the semi-conducting material. A group of Solar PV modules are typically combined in an array to produce electricity in the form of DC current which is then generally inverted to AC current, fed into your fuse board via a feed in meter and into the National Grid.

Financial Incentives (FITS)

Solar Electricity is not only competitive with other sources of energy in terms of cost, but directly contributes to reduction in greenhouse gases. Now with the domestic “Feed in Tariffs”  Solar Photovoltaic technology can also offer a good long term investment opportunity.

Solar PV - How much does it cost?

When deciding on what system is right for you there are 2 main factors to consider:

  1.  How much available roof space do you have?
  2.  What is your maximum investment?

How much electricity you use each month is not really relevant as the bulk of your electrical consumption comes from heating and lighting – 2 things that we use when the sun is not shining. As with most things in life, the more your initial investment, the greater your potential return.

As an example a basic 1.48kW system cost starts at just £6,090.00 inc VAT which gives you a cost per kW of £4,115.00. A basic 2.96kW system cost starts at just £10,238.00 inc VAT which gives you a cost per kW of £3,459.00. That represents a massive saving of around £656.00 per kW.
